Dog Doors are Fantastic… I think

In our house, there’s a dog door that leads from the laundry room to the back yard. The last 2 days, we’ve been teaching Lacey to use the dog door.

She’s so funny. At first, she didn’t want any part of it. Then she would stick her head out, but not continue through. Sometimes I would push her the rest of the way out. Then open the flap so she could see and come back in. Both of these with commands of course. “Go outside” and “come inside”.

This morning I went into the laundry room and she followed. She stuck her head out the dog door and I gently pushed her through with “go outside”. Then opened the flap with “come inside”. In she came. Then she went out all by herself — woo hoo! Then she came in all by herself.

She was so pleased with herself. We had a little celebration right there in the laundry room. For the rest of the morning, it was go outside (clack-clack) woof woof woof in excitement. then come inside (clack-clack) dance around, smiling and happy tail. over and over and over.

It’s so great to see her personality coming out. She was so subdued and passive the first few days. She must have been so scared, and she would hardly leave my side. Now she’s much more adventurous, energetic, barks some, plays a lot (with people and by herself).

And now she can go outside on her own — what freedom!!

This is the greatest dog. Pictures coming soon, I promise.
