Dogs Dig — and What Do They Find?

Turtles! More specifically turtle carcasses!

We have a cement pond (can you say Beverly Hillbillies?) in our backyard. Kevin, the 18-year-old in the house, has been working on the pond for many months, getting it suited up for fish, amphibians, and lots of other swimming/underwater type critters. Over the last few months, we’ve had all kinds of water-loving creatures — turtles, goldfish, other fish, crawdads, shrimp, catfish, who knows.

Many have died, many were returned to the pet store because they weren’t thriving. Two of the turtles died. Apparently, the turtle carcasses were discarded behind the back wall where the water pump for the jacuzzi is.

Guess who loves her dog door and was in and out (clack-clack) all day long? And guess who found both of the turtle carcasses, took them to her new hiding spot under this big bush, and was eating them (one at a time she found and ate)?

You got it — Spunky herself. Another word to describe her would be Stinky. Now that she’s in and out of the house so much, finding turtle carcasses, hiding beneath the bushes in the damp dirt, she’s taken on quite a stench. I’ve got her crate set up in my bedroom so now my bedroom has quite the barnyard smell.

Especially this afternoon about an hour after I gave her her first introduction to raw chicken necks. Gas. Man o man. I had to open the window and the door to my bedroom and get a good cross-wind to even be able to stay in the room.

That’s been our second Saturday. It gets better by the moment — seriously. I love this dog.
