FLEAS!!!! My Girl Has FLEAS!!!

I’ve had this dog for 13 days, and just yesterday I noticed she has fleas. Not just 1 or 2 fleas, but there are thousands of them running rampant all over her. How could I have not seen these evil creatures before now?

I did a little research and have found some natural remedies. I considered Frontline or one of those products that you get from the vet. But they’re so harsh and chemical laden.

I did a quick google search and came up with this article: WHAT CAN WE DO ABOUT FLEA CONTROL IN DOGS AND CATS?. It’s a great article. Then I went back to the SERPs and clicked on this page about natural flea remedies. I ordered the shampoo and spray from the top line and the diatomaceous earth for carpet and bedding.

I figure I can use the DE for the cats’ bedding too, now that they’re going outdoors.

I’ve used DE before on bedbugs (yes, they really do exist) in my mattress. It worked great. For those of you nerds who want to know how diatomaceous earth works — it creates an environment where certain creatures, like fleas and bedbugs, dehydrate and die. Therefore, vacuuming becomes important.

The label on the DE says it can be put directly on the animal, after all, it’s really only dirt. So I might try that too.

Beats the heck outta picking them off one by one and either pulling their bodies apart or dropping ‘em in a little dish of windex (or bleach, whichever is handiest).

Also learned that brewers yeast and garlic (as if her breath wasn’t bad enough) work from the inside out. Good nutrition is also important — dogs in good overall health don’t attract fleas so much as unhealthy dogs. hm — good to know. I’ll also get a good flea comb when I go to the pet store tomorrow. I know she’ll love that!

As soon as I get these products, I’ll start using them. Will let you know if they work. In the meantime, I’ve got my little dish of windex handy.
