Dog Crates are the Best

I set up her new dog crate in my bedroom at the end of my bed. She slept in it, and we both actually got some sleep. It gave me a lot of peace of mind because I knew she wasn’t roaming all over the bedroom. She woke up about 4am and we went outside for a bathroom break and a couple of treats. From 4 til about 6:30 was dicey in the sleep department cuz she was ready to start the day.

About 6:30 I gave up and we went for a long walk. Again, relieved herself outside, and got some way yummy treats and lots of and lots of love and praise. Honestly, I’ve about had it with cleaning the carpet!

When I take her out, I put the leash on her and take her out the front door. I almost always make her wait (with the “wait” command) and I go out the door first (it’s a pack order thing). She knows without a doubt that I’m the alpha. We get outside and the phrase I’m teaching her is “on the grass”. We walk on the front yard grass until she either does something or gets so distracted that I give up. If she does something, I name it “poop” “pee” whatever. The thing is to be consistent with what you call things.

I’m thinking about having the crate be more involved in the training. If I notice it’s working, I’ll write about what I’m doing. Otherwise, I’ll do something else.

I think later today we’re going to the park. I also want to start in with some obedience training — heel, sit, down to start. She’s getting the “let’s go” command when we walk.

I’ve worn her out this morning and she’s in her crate (voluntarily and with the door open — see, aren’t dog crates great?!) snoozing right now. Gearing up for the next round of activity.
